About kerr:
Hi, I’m Kerr.
I’ve been living and working as a dog trainer on the Sunshine Coast for over eight years. I'm a certified trainer through the National Dog Trainers Federation of Australia—the only government-recognised dog training qualification in the country.
Beyond formal training, I dedicate all of my spare time to studying dog behaviour and the incredible complexity of the canines we share our lives with. Even after all these years, dogs still manage to surprise me every single day.
I also have a passion for passing my knowledge on to other people.
I have a deep passion for dog sports—especially PSA (Protection Sports Association) and scent detection. I love the way these disciplines challenge both dog and handler to grow as a team, and I’m constantly refining my skills in both areas. These sports push the boundaries of communication, drive development, and control, and they’re a huge part of how I stay sharp and keep learning.
I’m also a registered judge and Certifying Official with Australian Canine Scent Work—the only official body for K9 Nose Work® titles and ORTs in Australia.
Over the years, I’ve worked with dogs and their people all up and down the coast through private sessions and group classes. A few years back, I launched a solo project called Utilitydog, which has grown into the business you’re visiting today.
When I'm not working with clients, you’ll find me out and about with Zee and Gary—either at the beach or off-grid somewhere, making the most of the lifestyle a Utilitydog allows.
Thanks for stopping by,
Kerr
About gary
This is Gary—a nine-year-old Border Collie, though it feels like just yesterday he was a tiny puppy.
I’ve known Gaz since he was just eight weeks old, and he’s been a very good boy ever since. In fact, he was the inspiration behind Utilitydog. You might have seen him pop up on other websites or social media platforms—he also works with LeadingK9.
One day, I realised just how valuable it was to have taught Gary practical skills: opening and closing doors, grabbing a drink from the fridge, picking up dropped items (like a sock or my hat when it blows away at the beach—which happened today), retrieving his own leash, and even helping me find my keys.
Not only are these tasks useful, but more importantly, they give Gary a sense of purpose. These small jobs enrich his daily life and allow us to enjoy such a rewarding partnership. He’s fulfilled, focused, and free.
That’s the core ethos behind Utilitydog—giving dogs both purpose and freedom.
And it all started with one little brown and white Border Collie.
About ZEE
This is Zee
—the newest member of the Utilitydog crew. He’s a three-year-old German Shepherd mix, and an incredible addition to the family.
We found Zee at the local council pound, and after a few days of getting to know each other, he came home with us. Like many rescue dogs, Zee presented some unique challenges, but he’s been nothing short of amazing.
Training and living with Zee has taught me a great deal. He’s pushed me to grow as a trainer and continues to remind me of the value of patience, adaptability, and trust.
Right now, Zee is learning the ropes of PSA (Protection Sports Association) and is developing his skills in scent detection. He’s proving to be both driven and thoughtful—a real pleasure to work with.
